Worst Match of the Year
Whilst we don’t want to dwell on some of the numerous disappointing performances of 2020, they do help us appreciate the magnitude of the important wins and dazzling performances.
Here’s a quick run-through of the nominees for the 2020 WBA Report Worst Match of the Year:
#1 Brentford 1-0 West Brom (26/06/20)
Embed from Getty ImagesBy no means the worst performance of the year, our loss to Brentford certainly ranks as one of the most disappointing results of 2020. We could’ve put some distance between us and the in-form Bees if Albion could have avoided defeat in the capital.
After Watkins steered home, there was an apparent absence of fight from West Brom as the game petered out in the second half. It was a cliched six-pointer and it always stings to be on the losing end of them. Eventually the result proved inconsequential, but this began an unnecessarily frantic end of season run for the Baggies.
#2 Huddersfield Town 2-1 West Brom (17/07/20)

Bilic geared the squad for the play offs in the knowledge they’d blown what was previously considered an unassailable lead over third place. Most fans had lost hope, Brentford were red hot and faced strugglers Stoke and Barnsley in their remaining games.
It was a shock result. Our season was seemingly over and we were the architects of our own demise. I never thought I’d say this but, thank God for Stoke City!
#3 West Brom 0-3 Aston Villa (20/12/20)
Embed from Getty ImagesUtterly toothless in attack, shambolic in defence. Allardyce’s first game in charge was a disaster.
The less said about it the better. Two seasons ago we were the better side; two seasons on and the gulf in class is startling. It was an embarrassing evening to support Albion, the absolute worst way to feel about the team you support.
#4 West Brom 0-5 Leeds United (29/12/20)
Embed from Getty ImagesAnother tragic home loss. Both of Allardyce’s home games have found their way on to this list and it’s hard to blame him for the Baggies’ capitulation.
2020 began with the same fixture. It ended 1-1, a fair result between two well-matched sides. The same couldn’t be said in this match as Sawyers set the done with one of the worst own goals that you’ll ever have the displeasure of seeing. Leeds were rampant and were deserving of their big, flamboyant victory. We were abysmal and serious questions have to be asked not only of the squad’s ability but of their commitment also.
The Results:
- 5-0 vs Leeds (58.5%)
- 3-0 vs Villa (26.5%)
- 2-1 Huddersfield (13.8%)
- 1-0 Brentford (1.2%)
The recipient of the 2020 WBA Report Worst Match of the Year award is West Brom 0-5 Leeds United.
