One aspect of the club that has always been commended is the firm grip on finances and the shrewd business carried out by the board each season.

This was particularly the case when Jeremy Peace was in charge; the club may not have had much in terms of player expenditure, but they were always kept well afloat by fairly hefty sums of money from player sales.

Here is a list of the top ten highest transfer fees from player sales ever received.

#10 Jason Koumas (Wigan) – £5.3m

Jason Koumas was sold to Wigan Athletic in July 2007 for £5.3m, a deal which represented a £3m profit for the Baggies, who bought the Wales midfielder from Tranmere for £2.25m in 2002.

Koumas featured in 133 matches for West Brom, scoring 23 goals and providing 20 assists in the process; he would play a total of 9,929 minutes for the Albion before his switch to Wigan.

#9 Borja Valero (Villarreal) – £5.4m

Borja Valero joined Villarreal in July 2011 for £5.4m after having just spent a season loan with the La Liga side, featuring in 35 matches.

Valero never really embedded himself into the Albion set-up and despite having a fair few appearances for the first team, he was never completely settled, which is why he had loans to Mallorca and Villarreal before returning to Spain for good.
