Even as early as October, this fixture was a classic. First vs. second: Bielsa vs. Bilic.

It was a tense fixture, settled by a deflected shot from Ezgjan Alioski in the 55th minute. This was harsh on the Baggies, to say the least.

Albion continued to threaten for the rest of the match, however failed to capitalise on their chances, ultimately falling to their first defeat of the season.

Albion entered this fixture in shaky form following draws against Brentford and Barnsley over Christmas. It was crucial that Albion won to put daylight between them and third place.

Whether it was down to Middlesbrough’s tenacious performance or the hectic Christmas schedule, it was poor from Bilic’s men.

The dire performance was aptly summed up by Ashley Fletcher’s 45-yard lob over Sam Johnstone, which put the Boro two up and was enough to secure all three points.

This was perhaps Albion’s most defining result since post-lockdown football resumed.

It was a cagey affair, with both sides threatening; however, it was settled by an Ollie Watkins tap-in 16 minutes into the first half.

Ultimately, it allowed Brentford to continue marching on in their quest for automatic promotion.
